Central Government Gazetted and Restricted Holidays List for the year 2020

The Department of Personnel & Training recently issued the gazetted and restricted holidays list through an office memorandum for the year 2020.

This office order will be applicable for all central government departments, ministries, PSUs. So we can say that it will also be valid for the Indian Railways, Coal India, India Post, Delhi Metro, EPFO, Income Tax Department, NTPC, and ONGC.




The DoPT office orders contain the 14 compulsory holidays list which must be same for all central government offices located across the country.

  2. Diwali
  3. Good Friday
  4. Guru Nanak Jayanti
  5. Id-ul-Fitr
  6. Id-ul-Zuha
  7. Independence Day
  8. Gandhi’s Jayanti
  9. Mahavir Jayanti
  10. Muharram
  11. Prophet Mohammad’s Birthday
  12. Republic Day
  13. Vijay Dashmi


Central Government offices located outside the Delhi, needs to select three holidays from the following 12 occasions.

  1. An Additional Day for Dussehra
  2. Holi
  3. Janmashtami (Vaishnavi)
  4. Ram Navami
  5. Maha Shivratri
  6. Ganesh Chaturthi
  7. Makar Sankranti
  8. Rath Yatra
  9. Onam
  10. Pongal
  11. Sri Panchami/ Basant Panchami
  12. Vishu / Vaishakhi / Vaisakhadi / Bhag Bihu / Mashadi Ugadi / Chaitra Sukladi / Cheti Chand / Gudi Padava / 1st Navratra / Naoraj / Chhath Puja / Karva Chauth

In addition to the above days, a government employee can take two from the Restricted Holidays list in a Calendar Year.
