SBI PO Selection Process

State Bank of India Probationary officer selection process comprises of three stages as explained here.

  • Phase-I: Preliminary Examination
  • Phase-II: Mains Examination
  • Phase-III: Group Exercise

Let's check each stage one by one.

Preliminary Exam

All candidates who found eligible by the bank, they will appear in the Preliminary examination.  The graduates need to clear the cutoff to get selected for the next round. The exam pattern for the prelims shown here in the table.

Points to remember

  • Negative Marking - Yes (25%)
  • Sectional Cutoff - No
  • Separate Timings for each subject. Means time of one subject can't be utilized for the other subject.

The Bank will select 10 times of candidates (of the total number of vacancy) for the next round i.e. Mains Examination. Suppose there are 2,000 vacancies, then total 20,000 candidates get the chance to appear in the main examination.

Mains Exam

The main exam consists of two papers whose details are hereunder.

  • Objective Paper (200 Marks)
  • Descriptive Paper (50 Marks)

Mains - Objective Test

The timings for each subject is separate like the prelims exam. Here the difficulty will be higher than the prelims exam.

Mains - Descriptive Paper

It will have two questions on Essay writing and Letter writing with a total of 50 marks. Aspirants need to write the Essay and Letter on the computer with the help of keyboard. This paper will be conducted immediately after the Mains-Objective test.


  • Negative Marking - Yes (25%)
  • Sectional Cutoff Marks - No
  • Total Marks in mains (Objective + Descriptive) - 250

Group Exercise & Personal Interview

On the basis of individual performance, the State Bank of India will call the candidates for Group Exercise & Interview round.

The total number of applicants appearing in this phase-III will be 3 three times of the total number of vacancy notified by the bank. Suppose there are 2,000 vacancies as per the official advertisement. Then the Bank will call 6,000 candidates for the Group Exercise & Interview round.

SBI PO Final Selection

The final selection will be based on the performance in the Main Exam and Phase-III stage. The weightage criteria for the final selection shown here in the table.

As the weightage marks for the Main Examination are 75%, hence they are crucial for selection. Those who get more the main Examination, their chances of selection will also be higher.
