The Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited formed in the year 2000 by the converting the Department of telecom services and the Dpt of Telecom Operation into a separate independent entity. It is the largest wireline telephone service as well as the wired broadband provider in the Country.

Before 2000 it was known as Doorsnchar Vibhag ( Department of Telecommunications in short DoT ) and the Junior Telecom Officer cadre was adopted from the DoT era.

Presently the post still exists in the both DoT as well as in the BSNL. The Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited Recruits the JTOs through the current year GATE score card basis whereas the DoT issue appointment on the basis of performance in the Indian Engineering services examination.
The immediate higher post to the Junior Telecom Officer (Group-B/ Class -II) in the BSNL is the Sub Divisional Engineer which is also a class-II post.
